The initiative to hold the European Week of Sport began eight years ago, when the European Commission decided to respond to negative trends in dealing with physical activity of citizens, and Croatia immediately joined this initiative.
Throughout the week, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports organizes a series of activities aimed to show that sports can be practiced everywhere and at all times and that any, even the slightest physical activity, is important. So far, more than 200,000 citizens have participated in more than 300 events within the programs of the European Week of Sport.
- One of the strategic goals of the Government of the Republic of Croatia is to involve as many of our citizens as possible in sports activities, especially concerning children and young people. As a result, investment in sports has increased by more than 100%, along with investments in top sport for umbrella sports associations and national sports federations have continuously grown, as well as in sports infrastructure to make sport as accessible as possible to everyone, said minister Brnjac, thanking all the partners who joined the European Week of Sport this year as well as the ambassadors who are all inspirations for a more active and healthy life.
- Currently, a new Law on Sports is also in the process of being introduced, which will make an additional step forward, providing thus additional assistance to support local sport - added Brnjac.
As part of the opening of the European Week of Sport, thanks to the partnership with the Croatian Dance Sport Association, the citizens had the opportunity to step in, test their motor skills for sports dancing, individually and in pairs, participate in a mini dance competition and show their dancing skills.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports also promoted the new European Commission’s initiative "HealthyLifeStyle4All", in which Croatia is participating as well, which promotes the values of healthy living. Citizens therefore had the opportunity to sign the Decision on healthier lifestyle and thus symbolically decide to adopt healthy habits.
The National Sports Day is scheduled to be held in Sports Village at Zagreb's Jarun lake on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and BeActive Night, hosted this year by the city of Karlovac.
