Both volleyball teams will play in Mediterranean Games’ quarterfinals, despite losing in five sets. For the first place in Group B, our female volleyball players were not harmed by the loss to Tunisia, which was 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-25, 25-19, 23-21) in the final round of group playoffs. The quarterfinal match is on Thursday, and it is also a chance for a little rest after three games in three days.
In a very uncertain match, Croatian female volleyball players were defeated by Serbia with 2-3 (25-21, 20-25, 25-12, 22-25, 11-15) in their group A appearance. Nevertheless, the earlier victory against France, which also lost to Serbia, would be enough for the Croats to advance to quarterfinals. Božana Butigan was the best in the Croatian national team with nineteen points. Martina Šamadan added eighteen points and Mika Grbavica and Laura Miloš 14 points each.
Our badminton players, after winning bronze in Doubles, turned to individual performances. In the Round-of-16, Luka Ban beat Algeria's Mohamed Abderrahime Belarabi with 2-0 in sets, while Filip Špoljarec was defeated by Italy's Giovanni Toti in the Round-of-16 with 2-0 in sets (21-16, 21-9).
In the Boxing tournament, we lost a single representative. Nikolina Čačić (21), the only Croatian representative in women's competition and the first Croatian boxer in the history to compete at the Mediterranean Games, lost her 54kg quarterfinals match to Montenegro's top boxer Bojana Gojković. The referees’ decision was unanimous, with all three point-giving judges (Algeria, Italy, Tunisia) scoring 10-9 three rounds, each in favor of the Montenegrin athlete. Croatian Olympian and European U-22 Champion Nikolina Čačić (Omega Zagreb) lost all three rounds in points to the brilliant young Montenegrin, twice in a row the Junior European Champion and two-time European Champion in the younger seniors’ category.
The boxing team finished their performance at the Mediterranean Games in Oran - Noa Ježek and Damir Plantić were knocked out in the Round-of-16, Nikolina Čačić in quarterfinals, and Petar Krešimir Knežević surrendered the match without a fight due to stomach problems.
After the mess with announcement of the results in Men's Gymnastics, it was finally confirmed that in the finals of the discipline we will have two representatives - Mateo Žugec and Jakov Vlahek, while our greatest hope Tin Srbić did not make it to the finals. He remained in ninth place as first reserve. On Wednesday, Ana Đerek will also have final performance in Beam and Floor exercise and Tijana Korent in Vault. (NOC of Croatia/VK)
