Zagreb, April 15, 2020 - International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (MDSRM) is an annual celebration of the power of sports to drive social change, community development and to foster peace and understanding. Since the partners cannot celebrate it in accordance with the clauses of the agreement signed in early February in Zagreb, they jointly propose: LET’’S MARK IT TOGETHER - ONLINE!
On August 23, 2013, at the U.N. headquarters in New York, the UN General Assembly made a decision to proclaim April 6 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (MDSRM) – a decision that represents a historic step in recognizing the transformative power of sports and its great potential in advancing positive social changes. Sports has the power to change the world; this is a fundamental right, a powerful tool for strengthening social ties and promoting sustainable development, peace, solidarity and respect. The Croatian Olympic Academy (HOA) - in cooperation with the Croatian United Nations Association (HDUN) and the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO) – marks each year this day by organizing a joint tournament in futsal and basketball, recreational table tennis and
bubble football at the Zagreb Fair.
On this occasion, all participants sign certificates – pledges for creating partnerships in achieving the goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda, followed by joint photo shooting by raising white cards, symbolically supporting the international "White Card" campaign. As a reference to the yellow and red card in the world of sports, since 2014 "WhiteCard" has been a symbol that represents the positive power of sports for peace and social inclusion. It aims to highlight and draw attention to the stories of individuals from all around the world whose lives were positively affected by sports. Through unique individual skills and collective strength, we can get together and share creative ways to improve health and well-being through sports and physical activity - even within the borders of our homes. This year we invite everyone to be active, healthy and show solidarity in this period of physical and social distancing. This team spirit will help all of us face the current challenges together. Due to the circumstances related to the coronavirus pandemic COVID-19 and the recommended precautions, this year's public celebration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace has been cancelled. However, in an effort to remind ourselves of the importance of marking this day, we invite the public to join the campaign marking this important date online! Share your photos with us with a raised white card in support of the international campaign "White Card"! All you have to do is take any white cardboard/plain paper, take a photo and mark it with a label #IDSDP2020 #HDUN #WhiteCard #April6, and send it latest by April 15. This way we become part of the international community dedicated to building a better society.
