Baku, July 24, 2019 -Croatian judoka, cadet Ana Viktorija Puljiz won a gold medal in the category -48 kg at the XV European Youth Summer Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Baku, confirming the status of one of the best young athletes in our beautiful homeland. In the round of 8, the fantastic Solin native used ippon and wazari to beat Georgia 's Gagoshidze-Filkina, and in the quarterfinals she used ippon to beat the British Bostock. In the semifinals’ duel with Belgium 's Dierickx ippon was also sufficient to secure at least a silver medal. In the finals with Portuguese Raquel Brito, Puljiz successfully preserve the advantage of wazari, earned after 13 seconds of fighting, for the third Croatian gold medal at EYOF.

 

The bronze was won by the Belgian Celine Dierickx and Italian Carlotta Avanzato.
- I had four tough fights today, but I was really relaxed. I knew I could do it and I am very happy with the won gold medal - said Ana Viktorija Puljiz after the final match.

 

With the gold at EYOF in Baku, Ana Viktorija Puljiz continued this year's trophy series. In June she won the European Cadet bronze medal, as well as bronze at April’s European Cup in Berlin. For her ever richer collection of medals she can also thank her long-time coach Dragan Crnov.

 

On the fourth day of contesting at EYOF, Croatian handball players were successful as well by beating Iceland with 24-21 and entering thus the semifinals. Unfortunately, our young basketball players lost in the extra time to Azerbaijan (54-58), so they will be playing playoff for 5th to 8th place in the ranking. Female athlete Ana Brkljačić took the 11th place in the Discus Throw finals. Stjepan Jan Cik entered the finals of 400 m Hurdles, and the fight for medals shall follow on Friday (6.30 p.m.) Besides the golden Puljiz, two other judoka representatives performed at the EYOF. Nikola Zorotović (category -55 kg) lost in his debut performance by the  German Ickes, with ippon ruled in favor of his German opponent. In the category -60 kg Nikola Vdović lost (wazari) against Czech Dvoracek. The remaining two judoka hopes – Katarina Krišto (-63 kg) and Dominik Rozić (-73 kg) shall perform on Thursday.
