Plovdiv, May 12, 2019 - The best Croatian rowers have proven to be very competitive at the premiere this seasons competition of the world rowing elite. At the first World Cup regatta in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, the Single Scull rower Damir Martin got back into the winning groove, the brothers Martin and Valent Sinković took second place in Coxless Pair, while the Lightweight Single Scull rower Luka Radonić was the first to step on the winning pedestal – in Saturday's program he won a bronze medal. Olympic Vice-Champion from Rio de Janeiro, Damir Martin, convincingly won the first place by being six and a half seconds better than the runner-up Belarusian Pilip Pavoukou, while the third was the Finnish Robert Ven.

After great performances on the way to the finals, the Olympic winners from Rio in Double Sculls and the current World Champions in Coxless Pairs, the brothers Sinković, did not enter the fight for medals in the same style. Being almost the entire race the third, in the finals they managed to beat the Spanish team, but did not manage to beat the Serbian representatives Martin Mačković and Miloš Vasić. They reached finish with the time of 6:36.030 minutes, only a bit under two seconds behind the winners.

Our best Lightweight Single Scull rower Luka Radonić won bronze with the time of 7:04.89 minutes, was ten seconds slower than the winner, Hungarian Peter Galambos and around four seconds behind the second-best Polish Jankowski.

New Croatian rowing star – Coxless Four: Tomislav Šain, Ivan Piton, Patrik Lončarić and Anton Lončarić took the fourth place (6:16.600) in the finals. In their debut performance at the big competition, the Croatian foursome attacked the third-placed Austrians in the finals, but still lost the medal. The winner was was Polish team with 6:08.400.

Three won places on the pedestals and the fourth place of our rowers are an excellent announcement for the upcoming European Championships in Luzern (from  May 31 to June 2), but also for the other forthcoming competitions (two World Cup races-in June in Poznan and in July in Rotterdam ), among which the culmination will be the World Championships with fight for the Olympic standards - in Linz from August 25 September 1.

Croatian Olympic Committee congratulates the rowers on successful performances at the 1. World Cup Regatta in Plovdiv! (COC/VK)
