Osijeka, 29th of January - In the presence of many notables of Croatian sports, science and education, the Promotion day of COC’s national project “Athletes and Education” – organized by the Croatian Olympic Committee (COC) and SportsAssociation of the Osijek - Baranja County - was held on January 29th at the Vice- Chancellor’s office of the University J.J. Strossmayer in Osijek.

Designed in accordance with experience gained for the model „Classified Athletes in the Education System’’ set in 2008, recommendations on the requirements of study of categorized athletes adopted by the Rectors’ Association in 2009, measures and activities proposed by the National Sports Council and directives of the COC Council and the European Union on the legislative, strategic and action plan to encourage the education and employment of athletes, this four-year project – launched in 2012 – aims to build a proactive and institutional approach to the obligation of the society towards top athletes.

The solid connection of sports and education was witnessed in Osijek by numerous top sports notables from the Osijek-Baranja County, among them also the great Croatian handball player, silver Olympian Katja Iles (Moscow Olympics 1980) and Mirna Rajle Brodanac, the most successful Croatian rower who was also moderating the Promotion day. Silver Olympian, rower David Sain (London Olympics 2012), Tea Sojat (karate), Antonio Sakic and Donna Vekic (tennis), Marko Babic (football) and Ivan Horvat (pole vault) have also shared their personal experience.

Introduction to the topic was given by the project coordinator Romana Caput Jogunica, who has conducted various researches on the needs, interests and problems in meeting the obligations in education and sports, as well as on real interests and requirements for education during and after competing, the criteria of study of categorized athletes at high universities and a number of other circumstances in today’s system.

The Promotion day was attended by the Minister of Science, Education and Sports Zeljko Jovanovic, President of the Sports Association of Osijek-Baranja County and member of the COC Council Zvjezdana Tuma Pavlov, Vice-chancellor of the University of Osijek Andelka Peko, President of the Committee for Sports and Physical Education of the University of J.J. Strossmayer Dubravko Izakovic and other notables of Croatian sports and society.
