Zagreb, 22 November 2020 - Croatian tennis players Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić achieved two extremely valuable successes in the week behind us. After pairing with Dutchman Wesley Koolhof in the ATP Finals in London, Mektić became the first Croat to win the Nitto ATP Finals i.e. the season-ending championships of the ATP Tour (tournament of the season's best eight pairs). He rounded-up his year-long cooperation with the Dutchman with his first triumph in this year’s third appearance in the finals. It was Mektić's 16th finals in the career and eighth won title of the winner.
Mate Pavić and Brazilian tennis player Bruno Soares secured the World’s Top Doubles status for 2020. Although they did not manage to enter the semi-finals of the London’s Masters (thanks to a worse set-quotient than the remaining two pairs with two wins and one defeat), that was enough for them to get to the top of ATP Doubles rankings. In a year and a half of joint appearances, the Croatian-Brazilian couple won the US Open and the tournament in Montpellierin in 2020, played in the finals of Roland Garros and Rolex Paris Masters, and last year they won the Masters in Shanghai and made an appearance in the finals of the ATP tournament in Stockholm.
In 2021, teammates from the Croatian National Tennis Team from Davis Cup Mate Pavić and Nikola Mektić will join forces and perform at international competitions as Croatian couple.
The Croatian Olympic Committee (COC) congratulated Mate Pavić and Nikola Mektić on great achievements at the end of this, for sports turbulent year and expressed hope that their partnership will also result in the creation of a strong tennis couple for achieving the Olympic ambitions, following the trail of great predecessors Goran Ivanišević and Goran Prpić, as well as Mario Ančić and Ivan Ljubičić.
