Zagreb, January 25, 2020 - After a 3-0 victory over the United Kingdom in a decisive match at the ITTF World Team Qualification Tournament held in Gondomar (Portugal), the Croatian Male Table Tennis Team (Tomislav Pucar, Andrej Gaćina, Tomislav Frane Kojić and Filip Zeljko) secured their performance at the Tokyo Olympics. Gaćina and Pucar defeated the Brits in Singles, and Kojić and Gaćina defeated the Brits in Doubles, respectively.
In addition to Tomislav Pucar (European bronze medal won at the European Games in Minsk in 2019) having reached the individual Olympic standard, we will have another hope in Singles at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Croatian table tennis players won – for the first time - a place among 16 Olympic teams after London 2012, when we were represented by Zoran Primorac, Tan Ruiwu and Andrej Gaćina, who will use his experience in leading the team into the new Olympic challenge.
Croatian Olympic Committee (COO) leaders - President Zlatko Mateša and Secretary General Josip Čop - congratulated members and leadership of the Croatian National Table Tennis Team on joining the safe passenger group for Tokyo:
Dear table tennis players,
you have made us very happy with your venture at the Olympic qualifications in Portugal, worthy of a team performance at the Tokyo Olympics. We believe that your great quartet, made up of experience and youth, will bring us much pleasure concerning your performance at the Olympic stage in Tokyo. On behalf of the entire Olympic Family, we congratulate all the players, Head Coach Karković, excellent expert staff and leadership of the Croatian Table Tennis Federation on great success!
