Zagreb, January 26, 2020 - Croatian National Handball Team won a silver medal at the EHF European Men’s Championships in Austria, Norway and Sweden. In a pretty even and tense final duel, played in Stockholm, Červar's favorites were defeated by the Spanish team 22-20 (12-11). This is the third silver medal of Croatian handball players at the European Championships after 2008 and 2010, and so far they have won three European bronzes – in 1994, 2012 and 2016.

It was also the fifth silver of Červar’s team won at large competitions, along with two gold medals. His collection still lacks European gold, which on this occasion would also grant his team the Olympic “visa” for Tokyo. In order to participate at the Olympics, Croatia will have to win at one of the four qualification tournaments in April.

The Heads of the Croatian Olympic Committee - President Zlatko Mateša and Secretary General Josip Čop - congratulated the handball players, Head Coach Lino Červar and his expert staff, as well as the leadership of the Croatian Handball Federation on winning a silver medal at the European Championships:

Dear handball players,
you have greatly upgraded your courage and fellowship to undeniable talent and this has led you to the finals of the European Championships. Gold remained an unattained dream, but you have once again won the hearts of Croats - in the homeland and in the Croatian diaspora - as well as the sympathy of the entire Europe. On behalf of the Croatian Olympic Family, we congratulate you on winning the new European silver and we are deeply convinced that you will be our important hopes at the Tokyo Olympics!
