Mies, November 15, 2019 - Croatian basketball players will have the opportunity to win the Olympic 'visa' for Tokyo 2020 at a domestic tournament that will be held at Split’s Paladium Arena from November 23 to 28 next year. This decision - made by the International Basketball Federation's (FIBA) Executive board – granted Croatia’s candidacy for hosting one of four pre-Olympic qualification tournaments. Let us recall, our basketball players won their last two Olympic performances at the tournaments that took place right before the Olympics – for Beijing Olympics 2008 they won at the tournament in Greece and for Rio Olympics 2016 they took victory at the tournament in Italy.

Since the remaining three selected tournament hosts are Canada (Victoria), Lithuania (Kaunas) and Serbia (Belgrade), the Croatian National Basketball Team avoided the mentioned national teams as possible rivals at the Split tournament. The rival's draw will be held on November 27, again in the Swiss Mies.

In addition to the four tournament hosts, the right of participating at the Olympic qualification tournaments was also granted to: Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Greece, Russia, Germany, Turkey (Europe); Brazil, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Uruguay (America); New Zealand, China, South Korea (Asia and Oceania); Tunisia, Angola and Senegal (Africa). Only the tournament winners will be granted to participate at the Tokyo Olympics. (Hina (Croatian News Agency)/COC/VK)
