Tokyo, 23 July 2021 - The Olympic Games 2020 were officially opened at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, and for this spectacle to have its full purpose and Olympic epithet, spectators in the stands were missing. The representatives of 205 participating countries paraded through the central part of the Stadium.

Croatia was 62nd in the ceremonial parade, and our golden Olympians from Rio - athlete Sandra Perković and shooter Josip Glasnović – proudly bore our national tricolor flag, followed by around 30 of our female and male athletes dressed in 4F sports brand equipment. Many Croatian athletes did not attend the Opening Ceremony because of the first Olympic performances ten-odd hours later. Among them were the Sinković brothers, as well as Snježana Pejčić, who can traditionally be the first to win an Olympic medal at the Games. She will have such a day tomorrow when, rather shaken by the illness of her coach Sena Čusta, she will try to repeat the venture from Beijing 2008, when she "shot" the Olympic bronze medal as well. According to the information of our medical service, Čusta's condition is stable, he is still in the sick bay and under constant medical attention.

In terms of numbers, at the Opening Ceremony of the Games our delegation was significantly enhanced by the water polo players, followed by the representatives of judo, boxing, athletics, table tennis, shooting, tennis, swimming and gymnastics. The host also announced the official figure of those present at the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad: around 6000 athletes and supporting staff, around 900 other participants of the Games and guests of honor, and around 3500 media representatives.

As early as tomorrow, our representatives will fight for medals in eight sports and the best possible sports impression at the most unusual Olympic Games to date. As a reminder, among around 11,000 athletes from 205 countries, the Croatian colors in Tokyo will be defended by 59 trustees in 16 sports. (NOC of Croatia/VK)
