RIO DE JANEIRO, August 8, 2016 (Hina) – On the second day of competing at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Croatian basketball players won against the current European Champions of Spain with 72-70, the handball players lost to the World Vice-Champions of Qatar with 23-30, the swimmer Matea Samardžić performed in the semi-finals in Women's 100 m Backstroke, while the Olympic Champion in Trap Giovanni Cernogoraz had a terrible day, not being able to defend his Olympic Champion title, ending up in the 18th place after three of five shooting series.
Croatian Men’s Olympic Basketball Team Rio 2016 took a big victory against the European Champions of Spain with 72-70 (13-21, 19-17, 15-16, 25-16), opening thus the path to their performance in Group B at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Bojan Bogdanović led Croatia to victory with 23 goals, Darko Planinic added 11 and Krunoslav Simon 10, while in the Spanish team, the best players were Pau Gasol with 26 and Nikola Mirotic with 19 points. In the uncertain final, the key move was made by Dario Šarić who blocked, in the last second, Gasol’s attempt beneath the basket to level the score. In the second round, Croatia will compete against Argentina.
At the opening of the Handball Tournament at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Croatian Olympic Handball Team Rio 2016 suffered a major defeat by Qatar with 23-30 (8-15). The current World Vice Champions were led victory led by Žarko Marković with 10 and Rafael Capote with six goals, while the goalkeepers Danijel Šarić and Goran Stojanovic collected a total of 14 defenses. In the Croatian team, the most effective were Manuel Štrlek with five and Luka Stepančić with four goals. In the second round, Croatia will compete against Argentina.
Matea Samardžić took the 13th place in the semifinals of Women's 100 m Backstroke at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Samardžić swam 1: 00.60 minutes in the semifinals, which was 14 hundredths of a second worse compared to her result in the qualifying round, which was also enough for 13th place in this stage of the competition. Her and Croatian record remained thus 1: 00:42 set in February this year. For 21-year-old Split native, this was another discipline where she performed in Rio, after a 17th place in Women's 400 m Individual Medley. Another discipline in which she will compete is Women's 200 m Backstroke.
After the first day of qualifying in Trap, Josip Glasnović took the excellent fourth place, while Giovanni Cernogoraz is in the 18th position. After three series of 25 bullets, Glasnović is in the fourth place with 72 hits, while Cernogoraz, who defends the gold from London, had 67 hits, which was enough for a modest 18th place. Massimo Fabbrizi, winner of silver medal at the London Olympics, is in the leading position with 75 hits, while Edward Ling of Great Britain is in the second place with 73 hits and Giovanni Pellielo of Italy in third place. Qualifying rounds shall continue on Monday, when there will be two qualifying series, after which the best six athletes will advance to the next round.
The shooter Marija Marović did not manage to qualify for the finals in the discipline 10 m Air Pistol. Marović took the 33rd place with 377 hit circles. Gold has been won by the Zhang Mengxue of China with 199,4 hits in the finals. Vitalina Batsarashkina of Russia, the best shooter in qualifying rounds, took the second place (197,1), while bronze medal has been won by Anna Korakaki of Greece (177,1).
The youngest Croatian Olympian in Rio de Janeiro, 17-year-old gymnast Ana Đerek, failed to qualify for the finals in any of the disciplines – in Individual’s All-Around she took the 52nd place, in Balance Beam the 77th place, while in Vault she got no points and in Uneven Bars she did not even compete. Derek began his performance jump which is not carried out, then did not compete on uneven bars, the balance beam after the fall received a score of 11.433, while his performance on the ground received a score of 13.200.
