Tarragona, June 29, 2018 - Taekwondoka Matea Jelić (in the category of up to 67 kg) joined the weightlifter Amar Musić and discus thrower Sandra Perković as gold medalists at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona.

Jelić has won three gold medal wins, sparked by Spain's Eve Calvo Gomez (10-7), then in the Semifinals she was better than the Slovene Dunje Lemajić (8-2) and in the final she beat the French Althea Laurin (9-7). When asked what "hindrance" she considered the most difficult, she replied:
"All three were almost the same heavy, even though at the start I had the most trophy-winning one, the Spanish Calvo Gomez. I'm happy with this medal because I'm finally on a winning pedestal, on which I was not for a while...
Since the Taekwondokas honored us a day before with two medals (Tomić with silver and Glasnović with bronze), Jelić's gold was no surprise. Therefore, the sensations of the day include Lino Červar and his handball players and heavyweight boxer Toni Filipi who entered the Finals by beating the European Champion.
Červar definitely has in his hands a new brilliant generation of Croatian handball players. Their winning path was not stopped by an experienced host. With 31-29, scored in extra time, Croatia beat Spain, in a match that was once again marked by sport dramatics and Croatian team spirit. Halil Jaganjac stood out with nine hits, with Mandić and Vranković adding five each...
- If we are already in the Finals, then we are going gold – said Tin Kontrec, while Lino Červar’s assistant Igor Vori talks in the same style:
- It would be a pitty not to take gold. I believe we can do it. We have proven that no one is unbeatable, not even Tunis...
The final match of the men's handball tournament is on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The boxer Toni Filipi managed to enter the Finals of the Mediterranean Games with interruption in the first round, and his oponent was the European Champion, the French Paul Gerard Omba Biongolo. In the third minute of the first round, the ambitious Filipi achieved a really bad hit at the French in the abdominal area and after that he could not continue the match.
Filipi’s coach Tomo Kadić has always emphasized the good preparation and the great potential of our weightlifter, now has expectations satisfied:
- If he defeats another European Champion in the final match - a super heavyweight who lost weight and is in the heavyweight category - Toni Filipi will get a much bigger gain than a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games. But even by entering the Finals he made a great deal for himself and for our boxing...
In both cases, we have only the hardest – to turn the secured silver into gold. With Mateja Jelić’s gold, Croatia currently has ten medals at the Mediterranean Games - three gold, four silver and three bronze medals. (COC/vk)
