Tarragona, 1 July 2018 – Team sports brought us another two gold medals that adorned the completion of our performance at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona. Looking at the overall effect, it can be said that our female volleyball and male handball players were celebrating somewhat sensationally.

Although they arrived without six important players and lost their Head Coach after the first match, the Croatian female volleyball team, led by the experienced Sanja Gamma, showed exceptional quality and defeated Greece with 3-1 (25-16, 25-13, 17-25, 25- 14). In terms of coaching almost inexperienced interim Head Coach Frane Žanić won the first trophy with the Croatian National Team.

The rejuvenated Croatian male handball team won gold in Tarragona, defeating Tunisia with 24-23 (9-12). It was a kind of re-play of the 2001 Finals, when our male handball team was the winner for the last time at the Mediterranean Games. In another "team triumph" Croatia was led by David Mandić with six goals, Halil Jaganjac and Josip Božić Pavletić added five each, Marin Šipić four, Leon Šušnja three and Josip Vranković one goal.

Croatia has thus completed its performance at the XVIII Mediterranean Games in the best way possible. Our athletes, 99 of them, brought home 17 medals (nine gold, five silver and three bronze medals) and the 9th place in the success rankings for 26 participating countries. Mersin 2013 still remained unbeatable with 27 medals brought to Croatia by 100 athletes. (COC/vk)
