Buenos Aires 2018 YOG

The third Youth Olympic Games (YOG) were held from 6 to 18 October 2018 in Buenos Aires (Argentina), under the slogans "Feel the Future" and "United by the Flame". For the first time in the history of Olympism, the Opening Ceremony Festival was held outside the stadium, at the host city main square and - for the first time in the history of Olympism – there was an equal number of female and male Olympians. There were as many as 4012 young female and male athletes from 206 countries, aged 15 to 18, competing in 37 sports and sports disciplines, including 36 Croatian male and female and representatives competing in ten sports.

The first Youth Olympics were held in Singapore in 2010, and the second edition of the Summer Youth Olympics took place in the Chinese host city of Nanjing in 2014. Compared to the other youth sports competitions, the Youth Olympics differ in the fact that they are offering a unique cultural and educational program dedicated to Olympism, social responsibility, skill development and healthy lifestyle.

Apart from the Olympic competition, Croatia was also represented in other activities related to the Youth Olympics. The Sports Ambassador (under the new name of Young Change Maker) this time was the swordsman Marija Lozančić from Osijek, and - among 30 young journalists in IOC’s media education that took place the during the Youth Olympics - was also our young reporter Filip Ožbolt from Rijeka, chosen as one of four European representatives.

Buenos Aires, October 13, 2018 - On the seventh day of the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Croatian Beach Handball female players won a silver medal while the male team finished fourth. After a great match where they defeated the Netherland’s team with 2-0 in semifinals – as a payback to for this week’s very narrow defeat 1-2 - they were beaten in the finals by the tournament favorites – the Argentina’s team, while in the fight for bronze Hungarian team defeated the Netherlands with 2-0 .

Buenos Aires, October 11, 2018 - After bronze medal in Singles’ competition up to 44 kg, judoka Ana Viktorija Puljiz won a gold medal in the mixed team competition at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. As a member of the Beijing team Puljiz gave, with three victories in her category, a major contribution to the team’s triumph.

Buenos Aires, October 8, 2018 – It's time for Africa! – says the message of the IOC members who have unanimously decided, at the session held on Monday in Buenos Aires, that Senegal will be hosting the fourth edition of Youth Olympic Games in 2022.

Buenos Aires, October 7, 2018 - As early as on the first day of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires (October 6th-18th, 2018), Croatia has two medals. The brilliant young judoka Ana Viktorija Puljiz won the first Croatian bronze medal in the category of up to 44 kg.

Buenos Aires, October 6, 2018 – The third Youth Olympic Games (YOG) opened in Buenos Aires with a spectacular ceremony held in the city center, at the foot of the National Symbol of Obelisk. At these Games, there will be 36 Croatian female and male athletes defending the colors of Croatia.
