Baku, July 22, 2019 – On the second day of contesting at the XV European Youth Summer Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Azerbaijani city of Baku, the young Croatian swimmer Franko Grgić won a gold medal in the discipline of 400 meters Freestyle. Already in the qualifications, this brilliant Split native won in his group, and then he swam his personal and state junior and younger junior  record (3:52.10), only 12 hundredths of a second slower than the EYOF record. The total of 33 swimmers  participated in competition , and Grgić triumphed in front of Germany's Silas Beth (3:52.63) and Greek Alexandros Kachris (3:53.53) in the finals.


Only as a reminder - the swimming miracle from Split’s club Jadran secured – at only 16 years of age – the Olympic standard for Tokyo 2020. He also holds the state record at 1500 meters, as the first Croat to swim that route in less than 15 minutes. His appearance in the discipline of 1500 meters Freestyle at the EYOF in Baku is yet to be seen...


Concerning the other Croatian female and male athletes, it is worth to note the semifinals of the female wrestler Iva Gerić in the category -61 kg. After the initial two victories, she was beaten in the semifinals by the later gold winner, the Italian Aurore Russo, and then in the fight for bronze by German Gerda Barth. Athlete Lukas Cik's entered – with seventh place in the  qualification round – the Long Jump finals (6.83 m), while Stjepan Jan Cik in 110 m Hurdles (16th place in the qualification round), Josipa Cecić (14th place in the qualification round of 400 m Race) and Ana Brkljačić (total 15th place in Shot Put rankings) failed to reach the finals.


Tennis player Tena Rajki was defeated by Spain's Gonzales with 3-6, 0-6, but in Pairs we achieved the tennis victory - Noa Vukadin and Patrik Jurina were better than the Swiss pair Brunold and Brunet with 6-4, 6-2. Handball players finished in a tie with Slovenes with 24-24, and basketball players were defeated by the French team with 56-76. (COC/VK)
