Gwangju/Zagreb, July 27, 2019 -Croatian water polo players continued their trophy series at large competitions. By beating Hungary with 10-7 in the battle for bronze medal battle at the World Championships in the South Korean city of Gwangju, the Croatian national team participated – for the seventh time in a row – in the winning ceremony at world meetings. This great tradition that lasts since 2007 and gold medal at the World Championships in Melbourne, followed by three bronze medals-in Rome 2009, Shanghai 2011 and Barcelona 2013, then by silver in Kazan in 2015 and gold in Budapest in 2017. Although one of the desired goals-placement in the finals and securing the Olympic visa for Tokyo-is not accomplished, our water polo players deserve congratulations for their performance and a new medal.
World Championships' finalists Italy and Spain secured their performance at the Tokyo Olympics, while the Head Coach Ivica Tucak has two more opportunities – European Championships and Olympic qualifications that will take place next year.
The heads of the Croatian Olympic Committee - President Zlatko Mateša and Secretary General Josip Čop - congratulated the water polo players on their latest success:
Our dear water polo players,
you were very close to return home with two major achievements – a won medal and Olympic standard for Tokyo. The first goal is accomplished, and for the other there are still other opportunities and the entire Croatian sports family believes in you and stands beside you. Cordially congratulations on the continuation of trophy-winning tradition; only a couple of teams can boast of!
