Zagreb, November 23, 2017 - A day before the beginning of the 46th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOO) in Zagreb, there were several exceptionally interesting meetings at the Westin hotel.
The working atmosphere began with the session of the EOCs Executive Committee, chaired by its Head Janez Kocijančić. The financial report for the current year was accepted, as well as the projection of the financial requirements for the next year and the status of the European Games was discussed, with conclusion that the perspectives of this competition are exceptionally good. Moreover, the new format of athletic competition will certainly help it. The presentation of the "New, dynamic athletics format", as it was named, occurred during the signing of a contract between the President of the European Olympic Committees (Janez Kocijančič) and the European Athletics Association (Svein Arne Hansen), paving thus the way for the application of the said innovation at the European Games in Minsk in 2019. Otherwise, according to the new concept of the "queen of sports", in crew/team competition there will be male and female athletes from 30 countries competing in ten disciplines during five days with a two-hour daily program. The male and female athletes will be divided into six groups of five teams and the best will be selected by using the knockout system through four rounds. The idea is still in the development phase, and the general rehearsal should take place at one of the competitions for athletes of younger age in 2018.
- Everything should be much more dynamic and more attractive for both the public and sponsors – says the message of the President of the European Athletics Association Svein Arne Hansen who expressed his wish to attend the Zagreb’s Athletic Meeting.
During the morning hours, a meeting was held between the leaders of the European Fair Play Movement (EFPM), Christian Hinterberger and Secretary-General Ioannis Psilopoulos, with the President of the Croatian Fair Play Committee (HFPO) Danira Bilić, the Croatian member of the EFPM’s Executive Committee Biserka Vrbek and other members of the HFPO. The range of activities of our Fair Play Committee was presented and at the end of the meeting Danira Bilić invited the leaders of the EFPM to mark the 10th anniversary of our fair play association on December 15, 2017 in Zagreb.
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, who will be one of the speakers at the opening part of the EOC’s Assembly meeting (Friday at 9 am), arrived at the Westin hotel in the early evening hours. After the first part of the Session, the five-member delegation will also visit the Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović (2 pm). Then the EOC’s electoral process will take place, with one candidate for the Presidential position (current Head Kocijančič), two for Vice-Presidents and 23 candidates for 12 positions in the EOC’s Executive Committee.
The first day of the Assembly will end with the ceremony - by presenting the Olympic awards and the EOO trophy Piotr Nurowski to the Best European Young Athlete at the gala dinner at 8 pm. A direct broadcasting of the EOC’s Assembly can be watched on Sports Television. (coc/vk)
