Aarhus, August 11, 2018 - Sailing brothers Šime and Mihovil Fantela became the Croatian sports sensation of the day by winning a gold medal in 49er at the World Championships in the Danish city of Aarhus.
According to the announcements, as a leading crew they performed the race for medals in a routine way, tactically almost perfect... Šime and Mihovil collected a total of 72 points and in the final race they entered finish the fifth, and by then the main followers - the Germans, were at the rear of the fleet, enabling the French Frei and Delpech to seize the chance and take a silver medal (91 points). As a comfort to the Germans, Fischer and Graf won a bronze medal (93 points), but Heil and Plössel ended medalless.

The Olympic and World Champion Šime Fantela entered thus the history as there are very few sailors who have won medals at world competitions in various Olympic disciplines. Among them are Brazilian Robert Scheidt, British Ben Ainslie and Ian Percy, Swede Frederik Loof and now Šime Fantela joined them.
- It's amazing to sail with own brother. After switching from class 470, winning the World Championships title this way as early as in the second season together - I could not even dream of it. We knew we were good enough to achieve a good result if the "conditions" are on our side. We used to the maximum the offered conditions, we did not stop even at yesterday's strong wind, with which we are still not too familiar. This is crazy! We wanted Tokyo and the standard for Olympic Games and now we are going home with a gold medal - said Šime Fantela.
- First, furthermore gold, and now I hope we will continue in this direction. Šime told me that we had to spend 10,000 hours in a boat to win the Olympic medal - added Mihovil, for whom this is the first gold at big competitions.

Šime Fantela holds the titles of World Cadet Champion in the Optimist class, a few titles of World Junior Champion in class 470, three titles of World Senior Champion in Olympic disciplines (two in 470 and one in 49er) and Olympic gold from Rio in 470 with Igor Marenić. (coc/vk)
