Zagreb, 6 April 2022 – Following the decision of the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, the day (6 April) when the first Olympic Games of modern times opened in Athens in 1896, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (MDRSM) - whose role is to recall the great potential of sports in creating a positive social change – is marked.
Based on the agreement signed in March this year, the Croatian Olympic Academy (HOA) marked the ninth International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with its partners - the Croatian United Nations Association (HDUN), the Croatian Olympic Committee (NOC of Croatian) and the Croatian Handball Federation (HRS). For the second year in a row, the focus was on the #WhiteCard campaign, which involved many Croatian athletes to spread the key messages behind the symbolic raising of the white card - solidarity, tolerance, peace, mutual respect, NO to any form of discrimination...
Again, the Croatian handball players gave a special contribution to the celebration of this day, gathered - on this occasion - for representative preparations in Varaždin.
Marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is also an invitation to all countries to invest more in sports, sports infrastructure, in recreation and raising the quality of physical and health education classes in schools. The UN resolution Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 contains an action plan for global prosperity, within which the role of sports is marked as essential for achieving the overall development and promoting peace and tolerance between people.
