Zagreb, 8 April 2021 – For eight year in a row, the Croatian Olympic Academy (HOA) marked the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, together with its partners - the Croatian United Nations Association (HDUN), the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO) and the Croatian Handball Federation (HRS).
Due to epidemiological measures and the ban on larger gatherings, the main activity of this year's International Day of Sport for Development and Peace focused on the #WhiteCard campaign, joined by many Croatian athletes in order to spread the key messages behind the symbolic raising of white cards.
- I want to thank all our partners, especially Croatian Olympians and Paralympians and other athletes and athletes with disabilities who have readily responded and participated in the celebration of the 8th International Day of Sport for Development and Peace and sent a strong message that includes and emphasizes the importance of peace, partnership and inclusion in society, promoted by the United Nations through sports. We are especially pleased to see that Croatian Olympians, Paralympians and other athletes and athletes with disabilities - with great achievements at sports venues - have feelings for others and a big heart with which they selflessly conveyed the actuality of these messages crucial for society and the state in which it is today – noted the Director of the Croatian Olympic Academy Saša Ceraj.
Among the Olympians, Paralympians, athletes and athletes with disabilities who became involved in commemorating the 8th anniversary of International Day of Sport for Development and Peace were: Sinković brothers, Croatian National Handball Team, Futsal Dinamo, MNK AFC Universitas - Split, Futsal club Osijek, MNK Gimka Uspinjača, captain of the HNK Hajduk Lovre Kalinić, Paralympians Ivan Mikulić, Mikela Ristoski, Ivan Katanušić and Judo club of people with disabilities Fuji and sports and sports and recreational program My Right to Handball.
It was them who showed what inclusion means in practice, how people with developmental difficulties experience real inclusion with people without difficulty, and how much it affects their everyday life and further development. (Croatian Olympic Academy / Croatian Olympic Committee)
