Zagreb, April 12, 2019 - As part of the Erasmus+ project Education through sport - shaping role models for the future, the Croatian Olympic Academy (HOA) held at the Zagreb hotel Westin the Workshop on Financial Responsibility and Financial Planning of Professional Athletes. Since the project is intended for ages 15 to 19, there were 55 young female and male athletes boxing, ice hockey, karate, football and handball, mostly from Zagreb clubs, that participated in the workshop.
The workshop was led by a financial expert from Slovenia and associate of the Slovenian NOC Miha Urek and guest lecturer was the prominent Croatian boxer and Olympian Željko Mavrović. In addition to the Slovenian and Portuguese NOC, the Croatian Olympic Academy’s partner in this project is also the Faculty of Sports of the University of Ljubljana.
After introductory notes about the workshop and Olympism in general, the Director of the Croatian Olympic Academy Saša Ceraj and Head of the Croatian Olympic Head of the Olympism Promotion Committee Ana Popovčić, Miha Urek reminded with an excellent presentation of the World Sports Notables who, due to poor managing their earned money, "reached the bottom" or -simply went bankrupt (Becker, Rodman, Graf, Thorpe...). He then reminded of the national sports stars that lost large sums of money due to poor investing, such as Balić, Kukoč, Ivanišević, Majoli... All this was accompanied by very enlightening messages about the use of money, as well as guidelines for smart investment in own future (education, insurance, pension funds...).
The famous boxer Željko Mavrović pointed out that every athlete must be aware of the fact that fame is short-lasting. He warned that one must always avoid investments that bring wealth "overnight" because almost usually these are frauds and used the folk wisdom "not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much" implying that a large amount of money can also cause big problems to a young man.
Several young participants of the workshop stated that this workshop gave them useful guidelines for a rational attitude towards money from the beginning to the end of their careers, where it is very important to provide for a case of injury and never forget that a sports career is not eternal...
