On 23 June, the world celebrates Olympic Day, the day when the modern Olympic movement was born at the Sorbonne in Paris 120 years ago. On 23 June, the world celebrates Olympic Day, the day when the modern Olympic movement was born at the Sorbonne in Paris 120 years ago.

The 2014 Olympic Day celebration programme in Croatia was implemented based on a cooperation agreement signed by the Croatian Olympic Committee, the Croatian Olympic Academy, the Croatian School Sports Association, the Croatian Sports Museum, the Croatian Olympic Philately and Memorabilia Society and the Croatian Olympians Club. The goal of all agreement signatories is common action aimed at the popularization of sport and its positive values, as well as dissemination of the Olympic principles among children and youngsters.

The 2014 Olympic Day celebration programme included 6 programme activities.

Poreč, 27 April – 6 May 2014
An art exhibition to the topic of the Olympic Winter Games was held during the finals of the Croatian National School Sports Association Championships, which took place in the town of Poreč. The elementary school finals (including 936 pupils in 108 teams) were held from 27 to 29 April, the high school finals (including 876 students in 96 teams) were held from 30 April to 2 May, and the intellectually challenged children finals (including 155 students in 31 teams) were held from 4 to 6 May 2014. Winners in two categories were awarded at the exhibition's opening ceremony – three best works in the elementary school category and three best works in the high school category. The Olympic Day, Croatian Olympic Committee and Croatian Olympic Academy signage (banners and roll-ups/retractable displays) was displayed in the sports halls and educational flyers to the topic of Olympism were also handed out to children


SUB – ECO BOL 2014, the Island of Brač, 29 and 30 April 2014
To raise awareness on the importance of preserving the seabed and environment in general, the Croatian Olympic Academy joined the 2014 SUB ECO BOL action of cleaning the seabed around the island of Brač, which took place for the 15th time in a row. The action took place under the auspices of the Croatian and Slovenian Scuba Diving Federations. Besides around 300 scuba divers, the action traditionally also involved elementary and high school children. All participants received educational flyers and other Olympic Day promotional materials, and a banner with the Olympic Day logo was symbolically placed underwater as an expression of strong commitment of sport and the Olympic Movement to environmental protection in accordance with the IOC Code of Ethics.

Olympic Day celebration for pre-school children, which included 350 children, was organized in cooperation with the Office for Local Sports Programmes of the Croatian Olympic Committee in Zagreb's city part of Podsused. All participants received t-shirts with the Olympic Day logo, medals, trophies and educational materials. The Olympic Day, Croatian Olympic Committee and Croatian Olympic Academy signage was displayed in the sports hall.

Olympic Day Central Celebration, Mladost Sports and Recreation Centre, Zagreb, 30 May 2014
The 7th Universal Sports School Day was the central event of the Olympic Day celebration for the 5th year in a row. The celebration included 778 elementary school students from all Croatian counties, 97 physical education teachers and 26 volunteers in the presence of Croatian Olympic athletes. A parade of participants with the signs of counties, from which the children came, took place at the beginning. The event was spectacularly introduced by members of the Lučko Anti-terrorist Unit, who parachuted into the stadium carrying the flags of the Croatian Olympic Committee and the Croatian School Sports Association. Welcome addresses were given by Mr. Nikola Perković, Chairman of the Croatian School Sports Association on behalf of the Croatian School Sports Association, Mr. Franjo Prot, Member of the Croatian Olympic Committee Council and Chairman of the Management Board of the Croatian Olympic Academy on behalf of the Croatian Olympic Family and Mr. Krešimir Šamija, Head of the Sports Development sector of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport. After the Opening Ceremony, the children showed their sports skills at 21 event stations. They all wore t-shirts with the Olympic Day and event sponsor logos. At the end of the sports competitions, all participants received gold medals and IOC and COC diplomas. All three national TV companies covered the event.

Olympism through Philately Exhibition, Zagreb, 9-20 June 2014
The Olympism through Philately philatelic exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Croatian School Museum and Croatian Olympic Philately and Memorabilia Society. It also included a few educational workshops for high school students to the topic of Olympism and Olympic Philately. The workshops were led by volunteers of the Croatian Olympic Academy and members of the Croatian Olympic Philately and Memorabilia Society. In cooperation with Croatian Post, special postcards, a postage stamp, as well as a poster of the exhibition were printed. The design and prepress of the postcards, postage stamp, poster and educational flyers were made by Maja Čizmić Regula from the Croatian Olympic Committee. The postage stamp and postcards were made for the opening ceremony of the Olympism through Philately exhibition on 9 June 2014. Welcome addresses at the opening ceremony were given by Đurđica Bojanić, Director of the Croatian School Museum, Ivan Librić, Chairman of the Croatian Olympic Philately and Memorabilia Society, Saša Ceraj, Director of the Croatian Olympic Academy and Franjo Prot, Member of the Croatian Olympic Committee Council and Chairman of the Management Board of the Croatian Olympic Academy.

23 June, Olympic Day Postmark
To mark Olympic Day, a special Olympic Day postmark was made with the date of 23 June. It was used at the philately counter of the post office in Jurišićeva Street, Zagreb, on 23 and 24 June 2014. The pictorial part of the postmark also features the number 120, emphasizing the anniversary of the IOC foundation and the birth of the modern Olympic movement.
