RIO DE JANEIRO, August 10, 2016 (Hina) - On the fourth day of competing at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Croatian Olympic Rowing Team Rio 2016 continued their path to the medal, the handball players achieved a victory, while the basketball players were defeated by Argentina and the sailors remained in the top rankings.
The current World Champions in Double Sculls brothers Martin and Valent Sinković have advanced into the finals after winning the first place in their semi-final group. The brothers Sinković were leading from start to finish, had the race under complete control and eventually won by being a second and 23 hundredths of a second faster than Kjetil Borch and Olaf Tufte. Jonathan Walton and John Collins of Great Britain took the third place, the last that led to the finals. Since performing together in Double Sculls, as of June 2014, the brothers Sinković achieved victories in 28 races in a row at major competitions, starting from the qualification rounds to the finals. Double Sculls finals is scheduled for Thursday, August 11th.
Double European Champion in Men’s Single Sculls Damir Martin (28) qualified for the semifinals with the best time in the quarterfinals - 6: 44.44 minutes. Martin was the fastest in his group, with five seconds advantage over Alan Campbell of Great Britain. Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand achieved the second best quarterfinals time (6: 46.51), and Hannes Obren of Belgium the third one - 6: 48.90. Men’s Single’s semifinals is scheduled for Thursday, August 11th
Croatian Men’s Olympic Handball Team Rio 2016 defeated Argentina in Group A second round with 27-26 (14-15). After a strong defeat by Qatar (23-30) in the first round, Croatia had many troubles to defeat Argentina in the second one. A goal that brought the victory was scored by Domagoj Duvnjak with a seven-meter-throw in the last nine seconds of the match. Previously, the Argentines had an attack for victory, pulled the goalkeeper in order to have more players in the field, but Duvnjak intercepted a pass from Pizarro to Portella at the six-meters-line, Portela made a big foul towards Duvnjak what - according to the new rules - means penalty shot i.e. seven-meter-throw, because the Argentine door was empty. In the Croatian team, Manuel Štrlek was the most effective with seven goals, while Federico Fernandez scored eight goals for Argentina. Earlier this day, France and Denmark achieved other victories without problems, France defeated Qatar with 35-20 (16-13), while Denmark defeated Tunisia with 31-23 (17-10). France and Denmark are now at the top of the group with four points, Qatar and Croatia have two each, while Argentina and Tunisia have no points. Croatia will play in the third round against Denmark on Thursday at 7:40 p.m. Croatian time.
Croatian Men’s Olympic Basketball Team Rio 2016 was defeated in the Group B second round by ARgetina with 82-90 (22-22, 18-24, 14-27, 28-17). In the third quarter, Croatia was 20 points behind (46-66), entering the last minute with only minus four (81-85). Then Simon missed a three-pointer 30 seconds before the end of the game, but at that point the Head Coach Petrović and Luka Babić got technical errors, after which the Argentines confirmed victory with free throws. Dario Šarić scored 19 points with 10 rebounds and 7 assists for Croatia, Bojan Bogdanović added 18, and Mario Hezonja 16, while the best in Argentina’s team was Luis Scola with 23 points. In the earlier matches in this Group, the host Brazil has defeated the European Champion Spain with 66-65 (34-31), while Lithuania was better than Nigeria with 89-80 (36-41). Argentina and Lithuania now have two victories, Croatia and Brazil are at 1-1, while Spain and Nigeria 0-2. In the third round, Croatia compete against Brazil on Thursday at 7.15 Croatian time.
Tonči Stipanović kept the high position after the second day of the Olympic Sailing Regatta in Rio de Janeiro, he holds the second place in Men’s Laser, Ivan Kljaković Gašpić opened the race with fifth place in Men’s Finn, while Tina Mihelic advanced to the eight place in Women’s Laser Radial and Luka Mratović is in 18th place in Men’s RS:X. Stipanović did not have as good day as on Monday, but he hasn’t made any major mistake and he certainly doen’t have a noose around his neck as certain other athletes might have. The seventh and 12th finishing place enabled him to remain in the high, second place, while the leadership was taken by Julio Alsogaray of Argentina. The athletes competing in Finn started with two races, Ivan Kljaković Gašpić is known as the sailor who is always very consistent, without large fluctuations, so he was sixth and eighth, fifth in total ranking, while the leadership was taken by Vasilj Zbogar of Slovenia. Tina Mihelic managed to keep going after yesterday's disqualification. After four races she took the eight place in Women’s the Laser Radial, finishing 12th and 10th in today's two races. The first place holds Xu Lijia of China. The sailor Luka Mratović dropped in the rankings to the 18th place after six races and right before the day off.
