On the occasion of the 1997 Mediterranean Games, the Croatian Olympic Committee published a publication – guidebook titled Bari 1997 Croatian Mediterranean Team. Its cover was designed by eminent Croatian designer Boris Ljubičić, who also designed the official symbol and flag of the VIII Mediterranean Games held in Split in 1979.

From that year on, the International Mediterranean Games Committee adopted that symbol with three Olympic rings as the permanent symbol of the Mediterranean Games. The symbol received the highest recognition when it was listed in the book titled 100 Years World Trademarks.
