In 2002, the Croatian Olympic Committee started a national project of the promotion of Olympic principles among children - the Croatian Kindergarten Olympic Festival - under the motto: “What is learned in childhood is never forgotten”. The first Olympic Festival was held in May 2002. Over 2,500 girls and boys participated in it in a dozen towns and cities. The Festival marked its fifth anniversary in 2006, when about 14,000 children from 34 Croatian towns and cities participated in it. Since 2007, it has been taking place under the motto: "I too will be an Olympian" and gathering over 15,000 pre-school children.

All children aged 5 or 6 attending a kindergarten in Croatia are eligible to participate in the Olympic Festival. The Festival is organized by the Croatian Olympic Committee's Office for Sports at the local level.
