The Croatian Olympic Committee marked on June 12, 2016 the first anniversary of the opening ceremony of the European Games Baku 2015, which took place from June 12 to 18, but – in a working way. The host city that performed its task flawlessly was the capital of Azerbaijan - Baku.
"The Games have shown that Europe is fully prepared for the challenge of these first European continental games", said the President of the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO) Zlatko Mateša on the occasion of the first anniversary of the European Games project, in which he was also one of the leading men. Special praise to the host who deserves the highest grade for the organization of the competitions, accommodation and sports facilities, said the President Mateša, emphasizing that thanks to the sale of TV rights in 145 countries, these Games were the most-watched after the Olympic Games. More than 800 million households watched the Games. These Games were broadcasted by the Sports Television (Sptv), the first specialized sports digital TV channel in Croatia, wholly owned by the Croatian Olympic Committee. Upon the completion of the first European Games, the President of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Mateša, head of the working group for the selection of host of the European Games 2019, announced that the second edition of the European Games will offer several novelties, based on the concept of innovation and flexibility in order to provide the athletes and sports an even better opportunity for progress and further development of sports in Europe.
At the first European Games in Baku, there were six thousand athletes from 50 countries including 106 athletes from Croatia. Of 42 countries whose athletes have won medals, the Croatian athletes took the 26th place with 11 medals; one gold, four silver and six bronze medals.
