On December 17th, in the headquarters of Vice-Chancellor's Office in Zagreb, President and Secretary General of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Mateša and Josip Čop and President of the Croatian Rectors' Conference Pero Lucin signed an agreement on cooperation with the Croatian academic community for creation of conditions and support to categorized athletes studying at the institutions for higher education.
In addition to empowering the current cooperation, this agreement is a precondition for the conclusion of a specific contract between the COC and various faculties in order to regulate – through general acts - greater flexibility of study, expert help and everything that is needed for harmonization of dual career of an athlete as balance of his sport, personal and social identity. This agreement is the result of longtime efforts of COC to adjust the education of the athlete to his extraordinary responsibility obligations as an athlete, but also to his responsibility towards himself and society as a whole. In understanding the role of athletes in sports development and society in general, as well as his ambassadorial mission, COC has been dealing with these issues with special care since 2008, when the project "Classified athletes in the education system" was launched.Furthermore, in 2014 the National program on career development after active sports career was brought. The National Sports Council supported the program and made suggestion that the same should be used for the goals of the National sports program, prepared by the competent Ministry.
The agreement was signed by the rectors of Croatian public universities, professors and PhDs, Damir Boras for the University of Zagreb, Šimun Anđelinovic for the University of Split, Željko Turkalj for the University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, Ante Uglešic, Rector of the University of Zadar, Vesna Vrtiprah, Rector of the University of Dubrovnik and Alfi Barbieri for the Juraj Dobrila University in Pula.
