ZAGREB, 16 November 2010 – Sports Television is the title of specialized television, with which HOO TV d.o.o. company owned by the Croatian Olympic Committee (COC) is participating in the tender for one of three specialized national digital channels.

Bids submitted in the public tender for the award of a broadcast licence for special television channels in a terrestrial network within Multiplex D (MUX D) were publicly opened at the office of the Broadcast Media Council in Zagreb today. Ten bidders had purchased the tender documentation, and eight, including Sports Television, submitted their bids. The Broadcast Media Council will decide on the award of the licences within 30 days from the opening of the bids (the deadline is 16 December 2010).
Sports Television is the first specialized sports television channel in Croatia, which will be a novelty in the Croatian broadcast media space with its unique offer. Coverage and presentation of primarily Croatian sports will be the basis of its activities. “Sports Television is one of the key Measures to Advance the Status of and Finance Sports, adopted by the COC Council at its 13th meeting held in March this year. A television broadcast licence creates an additional possibility to further and develop Croatian sport, and television is a driver for the popularization of Croatian athletes”, said COC President Zlatko Matesa. He reminded those present that the COC Council had unanimously supported the foundation of a separate media company HOO TV d.o.o. and that almost a hundred sports federations, associations and organizations supported the project.
The program policy will be covering all levels of Croatian sport, without making a difference between, conditionally speaking, “large” and “small” sports. It is sports television for all and all are at the same level – of course in accordance with the COC value criteria. It means that all levels of Croatian sport will be included, not only the top-level one, but also Paralympic, recreational, school, children’s, each of these aspects to the extent meeting the criteria set by the COC or local sports communities.
„The project of Sports Television is not and will not be financed from the Croatian Olympic Committee budget, that is, from the state budget funds,“ said COC Secretary General Josip Cop. It is a business model, which will be fully financed in cooperation with interested business partners and sponsors, as they will have an opportunity for even better promotion in a broadcast medium, which will have 92% coverage in Croatia,“ Secretary General said.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also supported the foundation of the television company. „No national Olympic committee in the world has its own television, although it is a recommendation of the International Olympic Committee from the congress in Copenhagen. Croatia will be marked as a pioneer in today's digital world as the first country to start this demanding business. We have founded the television company as a measure to enhance the status and functioning of sport in Croatia“, Cop said.
